In the construction industry, the adoption of concurrent engineering principles requires the development of effective enabling IT tools. Such tools need to address specific areas of need in the implementation of concurrent engineering in construction. Collaborative decision-making is an important area in this regard. A review of existing works has shown that none of the existing approaches to collaborative decision-making adequately addresses the needs of distributed construction project teams. The review also reveals that fuzzy logic offers great potential for application to collaborative decision-making. This thesis describes a Web-based collaborative decision-making system for construction project teams using fuzzy logic. Fuzzy logic is applied to tackle uncertainties and imprecision during the decision-making process. The prototype system is designed as Web-based to cope with the difficulty in the case where project team members are geographically distributed and physical meetings are inconvenient/or expensive. The prototype was developed into a Web-based software using Java and allows a virtual meeting to be held within a construction project team via a client-server system. The prototype system also supports objectivity in group decision-making and the approach encapsulated in the prototype system can be used for generic decision-making scenarios. The system implementation revealed that collaborative decision-making within a virtual construction project team can be significantly enhanced by the use of a fuzzybased approach. A generic scenario and a construction scenario were used to evaluate the system and the evaluation confirmed that the system does proffer many benefits in facilitating collaborative decision-making in construction. It is concluded that the prototype decision-making system represents a unique and innovative approach to collaborative decision-making in construction project teams. It not only contributes to the implementation of concurrent engineering in construction, but also it represents a substantial advance over existing approaches

An Epidemiological Review of Diet and Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma

    Get PDF
Incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma has continued to rise despite public efforts to promote sun protection behaviors among populations at risk. However, dietary factors may also affect the development of melanoma. In the past few decades, findings from epidemiologic and experimental research have linked consumption of several foods and other nutrients to the risk of melanoma. Caffeine has been associated with a lower risk of melanoma, and citrus fruits and alcohol with increased risk. Associations between polyunsaturated fatty acid, niacin/nicotinamide, folate, and vitamin D with melanoma remain controversial. Diet likely influences melanoma development through several potential mechanisms, such as enhancing UV-induced apoptosis and increasing photosensitivity. We conducted a narrative review to summarize recent epidemiologic studies of diet and melanoma based on published literature. Given the high prevalence of the food items and nutrients covered in this review and the decades-long rising melanoma incidence worldwide, the associations we discuss may have important public health implications in terms of reducing melanoma incidence through dietary modification

Specimen Orientation for the Calibration of Direct Scanning X-Ray Wood Densitometers

    Get PDF
It was found that specimen orientation has considerable effect on the calibration of direct scanning X-ray wood densitometers. A comparison between various orientations was made and verified by a test. Optimum calibration is accomplished when the specimens are made in such a way that the radiation beam is passed through the wood in the tangential direction and scans it in the radial direction

V2V Routing in VANET Based on Heuristic Q-Learning

    Get PDF
Designing efficient routing algorithms in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) plays an important role in the emerging intelligent transportation systems. In this paper, a routing algorithm based on the improved Q-learning is proposed for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications in VANETs. Firstly, a link maintenance time model is established, and the maintenance time is taken as an important parameter in the design of routing algorithm to ensure the reliability of each hop link. Aiming at the low efficiency and slow convergence of Q-learning, heuristic function and evaluation function are introduced to accelerate the update of Q-value of current optimal action, reduce unnecessary exploration, accelerate the convergence speed of Q-learning process and improve learning efficiency. The learning task is dispersed in each vehicle node in the new routing algorithm and it maintains the reliable routing path by periodically exchanging beacon information with surrounding nodes, guides the node’s forwarding action by combining the delay information between nodes to improve the efficiency of data forwarding. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated by NS2 simulator. The results show that the algorithm has a good effect on the package delivery rate and end-to-end delay

To limit the pulverization of tin-based anode materials during lithiation/delithiation, submicron tin oxide/tin particles are fixed on core/sheath carbon nanofiber/spongy carbon via hydrothermal and carbothermal reduction treatment in this work. During carbothermal reduction, SnO2 nanosheets are converted to spherical Sn submicron particles and simultaneously the hollow spongy carbon is produced and still enwrap on carbon nanofiber. The as-produced flexible film is used for a binder-free anode for lithium ion batteries, without the polymer binder and conductive carbon. At 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 2 A g-1, the composite electrode respectively displays a discharging capacity of 1393.0, 738.2, 583.6 and 382.6 mAh g-1. Moreover, it delivers specific capacity of 726.9 mAh g-1 and coulombic efficiency of 99.45 % after 300 cycles at 0.1 A g-1. The comparison sample of carbon nanofiber/SnOx film without the presence of spongy carbon displays much lower rate performance and worse cyclic performance. The integrated structure of carbon nanofiber/SnOx/spongy carbon results in the remarkable Li-storage performance, in which the carbon nanofiber and spongy carbon synergistically provide conductive channel and buffer zone to hinder the pulverization and peeling of SnOx particles during charging-discharging processes

It is significant to promote food tourism behavior. This paper aims to build a comprehensive behavior model of tourists suitable for food tourism to promote such tourism in Chongqing city, China. The paper deals with the place-bound and people-bound memories affecting tourist satisfaction, perceived holiday quality of life, and experience loyalty in the food tourism industry. The data were collected from 413 tourists who have experience traveling to Chongqing city through the online questionnaire. Multi-layer perceptron artificial neural network simulation provides a basis for factor ranking for structural equation modeling. The results show that place-bound and people-bound factors can predict experience memory, experience satisfaction, holiday quality of life, experience loyalty, and destination loyalty. In addition, it reveals the mediating role of experiential memory and contributes to the process of memory formation. Place-bound factors emphasize the vital role of marketing and social media information. They are consistent with the actual food experience of tourists at the destination. People-bound factors explained the different aspects of the food experience. The noteworthy aspects are intelligence, emotion, sense, behavior, and natural flow experience. The research results show that tourists, local governments, and tourism departments should focus on developing memory structures with local characteristics and improving quality and experienced food tourism destinations so that tourists can gain more sensory experiences or other experiences to attract more food tourists
